Stanway viaduct, British engineering at its finest…
The impressive Stanway Viaduct is an imposing 50 foot high feature on the Honeybourne Line, spanning the cotswold countryside valley with its 15 majestic arches leading to the famous Toddington station.
During the 1950s express trains running between Wolverhampton, the West Country and Wales would have crossed the viaduct reaching speeds of up to 60 mph.
The last time paying passengers crossed the viaduct was in 1968 on diesel trains that operated between Leamington and Gloucester. The service finally came to an end on 23 March 1968 and the black-and-white picture taken by David Aldred on that last day, shows the train powering across the viaduct towards its Gloucester-bound destination.
